Pre-judged?

One question that has been playing on my mind following the judging seminar is: Are we all guilty of pre-judging runs?

During his run, Kevin Evans was putting us all to the test - even if we hadn't realised it.

The intention of the seminar was to study the finer points of judging and encourage debate - and Kevin, taking on a devil's advocate role, provided plenty of opportunity for that.

<img height="200" width="250" src="http://www.k9tales.co.uk/images/stories/features/judgi [...]

So, as predicted, it's been a while since my last update.
That's the trouble with having dates on blogs, you can't hide from the truth.
Mist the puppy isn't entirely to blame - although she is very distracting and time-consuming.

She is now 6-months-old and is going through a tall, lean stage. She wouldn't look out of [...]

Barking up the wrong tree

News of Labour's plans to tackle ‘dangerous' dogs are causing a bit of a storm. And it's my current bone of contention.

Yes, animals can be dangerous - especially in the wrong hands. And let's face it, there are good and bad dog owners, but it seems the government's latest proposals will only punish the law-abiding citizens of England and Wales. Feel familiar?

A consultation, just weeks before the general election, is looking into amending the 1991 Dangerous Dogs Act.

< [...]

The new arrival

There's a new addition to the k9tales family... 9-week-old Mist the sheepdog.

Here are a few pictures of her getting up to mischief in the garden.

Unsurprisingly, life has changed dramatically in the last week and all my spare time has been taken up with the puppy. I've been left wondering if I'd ever get time to write again. Even now, writing this, she is chewing our rather nice sofa and constantly needs distracting.

In the coming weeks and months we'll be keeping you [...]

Well, the festivities are well and truly over.
Trials make a game of it

You've seen the Extreme Shepherds on YouTube, now you can preview a new extreme sheepdog trials game.

If you can't get enough of sheepdog trials and are feeling competition withdrawal symptoms in the quiet new year, refine your whistling and skills with Extreme Sheepdog Trials.

Being created as an app for the iPhone, Extreme Sheepdog Trials is causing a stir in cyber space and was runner-up in the AppsFire competition in December.

No news yet on the launch date, but you can [...]

Blast off

It's that time of year again.
No, not the nursery sheepdog trials season, but fireworks and thoughtless yobs season.
It's the only time of year when I'm glad Corrie doesn't live with us. She hates loud bangs - fireworks, thunder, gunfire - and thinks the best way to stay calm is to climb onto the nearest person's head.
This can be quite perturbing if you're sat on a cream sofa with a glass of red wine in your hand, or if you're tucked up in bed sound asleep.
For the last c [...]

The future may not be bright

The young competitors who took part in the eighth young handlers' sheepdog trial should be praised for their efforts, but I can't help feeling a little disappointed that there wasn't a better turnout.

Is it because other young handlers didn't know about it, or was it too far to travel for some, or maybe they just had other things to do.

As the trial organiser Colin Pickford said: "They've got to want to do it."

It creates a conundrum about the future of sheepdog trials [...]

No, the plane wasn't for me...

Right, let's clear one thing up: No, the plane wasn't for me!
For anyone who wasn't at the International and hasn't got a clue what I'm talking about, let me explain.
On Saturday a plane flew over the trial field with a banner trailing behind it with the words: ‘Lisa I love you, will you marry me?'
And it flew over twice for good measure.
Since then people have been asking if it was meant for me.
But alas, no.
Lee had already asked me to marry him on C [...]

Banking the holidays

Things seem to be conspiring against me competing at sheepdog trials at the moment.

And this isn't doing me, or my dog, any good. I think we may both be going a little stir crazy.

With the Nationals, August has been and gone with lots to keep me busy on the k9tales site.

Unfortunately, being at the Welsh and Irish Nationals meant no trials for Corrie and I.

<img height="200" width="250" src="http://www.k9tales.co.uk/images/stories/latest_news/u2-030.jpg" alt="u2-030" [...]

Across the water

August, one of the busiest sheepdog trialling months, already seems to be flying by. The 2009 Irish National is over and I've returned home after a tiring and busy, but very enjoyable trip to Co. Tipperary.

The Scottish National is now in full swing and next week will be the turn of the Welsh. The final National will be the English, from August 21st-23rd, being held in north Devon.

Leading the home nations was Ireland. After a four-hour ferry trip at some ungodly hour and a two-an [...]

Ding-dong, the bells will ring...

Many of the sheepdog trials fields on the South Wales circuit are held in quiet, rural locations, where the decibels rarely rise above that of the surrounding birdsong or a passing tractor - until someone starts having a bad run that is.

Mynyddislwyn trial field sits next to a pretty church and a shooting range. Out of the two you'd expect the disruption to come from the shooting range but this wasn't the case last weekend.

<img height="150" width="250" src="http://www.k9tales [...]

Magical mystery tour

A grand day out in north Wales...

This year I've joined the North Wales Sheepdog Society for the first time.

Having thought about it and calculated that the distance we travel to some south Wales trials is just as far, I decided we might as well head north too.

Last weekend we ventured to the hills to compete at our first trials there.

If I'd looked at the map before we set off I probably would have thought twice about it, but I'd left the route planning to mum.

[...]

It doesn't seem a minute since the start of the 2009 trialling season in Wales and already plans are being made for this year's South Wales nursery final in December.

Before we know it, the Nationals will be here and then we'll all be heading to the 2009 International in Cumbria.

Is it me or is the trialling season flying by?

Life in the k9tales office has been hectic too.

Feedback from you, the readers, has been great - thanks to everyone for logging on and se [...]

The devil did it!

Many excuses can be heard being muttered on the trials field after a bad run, so I thought I'd add a new one to the mix.

Having got up even earlier than usual to travel to Felindre and Dolfor sheepdog trials last weekend, I was left very disappointed after a disastrous run in the morning at Felindre.

Corrie went up the hill and picked up her sheep well, but as she brought them down the field they drifted offline to the left. So, naturally, I gave her an away whistle - but th [...]

Lambing over for another year

This year, for the first time ever, I've had very little involvement in the lambing of mum's Willowbrook flock of Kerry Hill sheep.

This is mainly because I now live in a town away from home and also due to my lack of transport (see Back on the road to trialling). As well as staying up for the night shifts, checking on any imminent arrivals, I usually take a week's holiday from work to give mum a helping hand, and I feel I've really missed out this year.

<img width="250" src=" [...]

Back on the road to trialling

At last I'm back on the road with a new car - mobile and independent once again - after more than five months.
It's a long story but the condensed version goes like this...
Last November I had a fall at work and damaged the nerves in my elbow,
making it impossible to make a cup of tea let alone drive.
Unfortunately this meant I missed the last couple of Pembrokeshire nursery
sheepdog trials. I had been running Corrie in the sweepstake classes and it
was doing us [...]
